Diop Harris is a proud Bearcat who grew up in Battle Creek playing football, competing in track and field, and serving on Battle Creek Central High School's Student Advisory Board. He also attended the Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center, where he developed an appreciation for problem-solving and public service. His commitment to community was influenced early on by his mother, who served on Tribal Council for the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the community, Diop learned the value of leadership, accountability, and showing up for others. As Diop came of age, the country was experiencing two defining moments. The 2008 financial crisis exposed how quickly working families could be left behind when powerful institutions failed, while the election of Barack Obama inspired a generation with the possibility of progress and public service. Those events reinforced Diop's belief that government can be a force for good, but only when it remains accountable to the people it serves. A school-record holder as part of Battle Creek Central's 4x100 relay team, Diop learned that progress is built through teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Those lessons would carry him from Battle Creek to Capitol Hill and eventually back home to run again, this time in a very different race.

After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Public Policy, Diop began working in communications, organizing, and advocacy roles across Michigan, Maine, and Washington, D.C. From local campaigns to statewide efforts, he spent years meeting people where they were, listening to their concerns, and helping communities make their voices heard. Working in competitive districts and battleground states taught him that lasting progress requires more than winning arguments. It requires building trust, finding common ground, and bringing people together around shared goals. Those experiences helped shape the coalition-building approach that continues to guide his work today.

Following the 2008 financial crisis that defined his generation, Diop joined Americans for Financial Reform, a coalition formed to advocate for stronger consumer protections and greater accountability in the financial system. There, he worked to advance reforms that protected families, consumers, and workers from the kinds of abuses that contributed to the economic collapse. The experience reinforced a lesson he first learned growing up in Battle Creek: when powerful institutions are not held accountable, ordinary people pay the price. It also strengthened his belief that government should work for the people it serves, not the wealthy and well-connected.

Diop brought that experience to Capitol Hill, where he served under former Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. Beginning as a Staff Assistant and later serving as a Legislative Correspondent, he worked on issues affecting working families, including economic opportunity, labor rights, infrastructure investment, and rural development. While serving in Senator Brown's office, Diop also served as Co-Chair of the Economic Justice Task Force from 2022 to 2024, an internal working group focused on advancing policies that expanded economic opportunity and strengthened support for working families. His experience on Capitol Hill provided a firsthand look at how legislation is crafted, how bipartisan coalitions are built, and how constituent concerns can be translated into meaningful action. It was there that he learned how to build coalitions, find common ground, and deliver results while remaining accountable to the people back home.

After years of organizing, advocacy, and public service, Diop chose to return home to Southwest Michigan. He believes communities like ours deserve leaders who understand both how government works and what local families are experiencing every day. Today, he is running for Congress because he believes public office should be rooted in service. He wants to lower costs, stand up to corporate influence, protect civil rights, and ensure every community across Michigan's Fourth District has a voice in Washington.
